With severe energy shortages throughout India, the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, has initiated
studies to design an economically viable substructure for offshore wind turbines. The installations could exploit 3, 100 kilometers of
coastline in the southern region (including the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala), where the energy shortage
peaked at 7. 6 percent during fiscal year 2013-14.
To develop the design, the Institute coupled aerodynamic and hydrodynamic load analysis with investigation of soil structure interaction.
SACS reliably tested various load cases and combinations to arrive at the optimal configuration. The software’s built-in features provided
soil properties at different layers, which were generated using PLAXIS 3D. The model was then used for various scenarios, resulting in
reduced computational and design cycle time.
Petronas Carigali Myanmar Ltd retained L&T-Valdel Engineering Ltd to install a four-legged wellhead platform (Yetagun North) as part
of the Yetagun Phase V Development Project in the Andaman Sea, Myanmar. The USD 100 million project included installation of an
11-kilometer pipeline from Yetagun North to the Yetagun Main platform, host tie-in works, and modification of the Yetagun-C Main platform
to accommodate additional facilities.
Performing the analysis in SACS ensured that the appropriate structural arrangement was selected for the platform without changing the
required free issue materials. Engineering activities were completed on time, and material orders proceeded with no impact on project cost.
L&T-Valdel’s timely delivery of the platform jacket allowed the owner to initiate drilling in the planned weather window with no downtime
due to inclement weather.
