Harris Pye Engineering was contracted by Diamond Offshore to design modifications required to enlarge the existing helideck on the
semi-submersible drilling rig Ocean Endeavor. The helideck was originally designed for a Sikorsky S-61N helicopter, and the enlargement
accommodates a 25-meter-long Mil Mi- 8 helicopter. Use of the latter would reduce the number of flights required to transport people.
Harris Pye used STAAD to model the helideck, which was designed with different structural software. STAAD allowed Harris Pye to
simply and quickly modify the design to meet the new geometrical and structural requirements. The process of class approval was also
accelerated, since STAAD’s code check of structural members was done in accordance with American Bureau of Shipping rules and guides.
These time savings reduced the overall cost of the USD 92,500 project.

MV- 18 Material Handling Structures
MODEC, an EPC contractor specializing in the installation of floating production systems, retained Harris Pye Engineering for design,
fabrication, and installation of two material handling structures on board the Cidade de Niteroi, a floating production storage and
off-loading vessel located off the coast of Brazil. The structures replaced six heat exchangers on an elevated module.
This USD 962, 160 project involved structural analysis and detailed design of the material handling structures, as well as assessment of the
platform for structural adequacy. The structures were prefabricated on shore, then assembled on the vessel. STAAD.Pro allowed Harris Pye
to simply and quickly model the structures and platform, reducing the time and cost of the project. Carrying out the installation offshore
while the vessel was in production minimized client losses.
