The goal of this EUR 3,500 project was to design two municipal maps at scales of 1:500 and 1:1000 for the city of Reus in compliance with
the Cartographic Coordination Commission of Catalonia (Spain) regulations. To be published in the Official Register, the maps had to be 3D,
which involved geometric purification, and adjustment and updating of the municipal cartography so that constituent elements were given
digital “z” components (lines, points, symbols, etc.).
Performing the mapping on MicroStation ensured that the maps would be fully integrated and operational with other vertical applications
such as Bentley Map and InRoads. Converting the maps to Google Earth format provided a free, non-CAD platform accessible via the
Internet and intranets. This allowed the general public to use the display without requiring knowledge of design programs, CAD, or GIS.

GIS Governs Czech Election Districts
The Czech Republic established election districts as spatial mapping objects that had to be defined, clarified, and maintained in the national
Informational System of Czech Territorial Evidence, operated by the Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre (CUZK). Within 14
months, CUZK collected information from all governments and municipalities ( 6,253 urban areas) and prepared proposals of continuous
election district boundaries for ratification.
An information system was developed for election district data and integrated with governmental information systems (e.g., land registry).
Bentley software’s interoperability allowed CUZK to work with mapping inputs in various vector and raster formats. The new system
provides a centralized store of election district data and controls the update process. Organizations can perform demographic or social
spatial analysis within the election district layer, and citizens can determine their own election districts.
