A New Authoritative Spatial Data Infrastructure for Ireland
Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi), the national mapping agency, has developed a standardized, authoritative digital referencing framework
that enables consistent referencing and integration of national data related to location. This visionary program enabled OSi to move from
cartographic objects to real-world objects in a framework, known as Prime2, that allows data users to accurately integrate and use multiple
data sources for improved analysis and decision-making, resource optimization, and efficiency gains.
Six years in the making, the new spatial data referencing platform is an object-oriented, digital mapping data model that provides for the
maintenance and development of the underlying physical infrastructure of Ireland. It enables geographic objects such as utilities, land parcels,
roads, and buildings to be uniquely identified and referenced. Bentley Map, along with some OSi-specified customized tools, allowed the agency
to manipulate the re-engineered data. The EUR 4 million project saved more than EUR 600,000 in operating costs and has established OSi as a
true leader in spatial data infrastructure. The project also provides the foundation for the build-out of intelligent infrastructure in Ireland.
