This unique EUR 9 million project in Beringen, Belgium, entailed the conversion of historical and protected coal-mining facilities to an indoor
diving center. Three massive concrete structures in which coal used to be washed now serve as a diving basin, training basin, and water
treatment facility. The project goal was to invigorate the economy, create job opportunities, and attract visitors from all over Europe.
The EILAND 7 architecten team’s challenge was not only the massive volume of water itself, but also the inclusion of tropical fish that
prevented typical chlorine disinfection. The project also had to be developed around an existing building protected by the Flemish Heritage
Department. The intuitive manner in which designs could be manipulated in MicroStation PowerDraft made it easy to react quickly to

BIM Modeling for More Than 2 Million Square Meters of Buildings
Brazil is experiencing an explosion of increasingly complex new ventures that feature tighter completion deadlines. Engbras Software
Projetos believes that only a BIM methodology can guarantee on-time construction deliverables, and has modeled more than 2 million
square feet of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings in the last five years using BIM. Since Brazil is still a predominantly 2D
culture, an overarching goal is to facilitate the migration to 3D.
Engbras Software Projetos uses AECOsim Building Designer to create workflows in which multiple disciplines share different file
formats – including point-cloud models – by integrating them into a single BIM environment. Some of these 3D models are generated as
i-models, which then can be opened with Navigator Mobile to understand and monitor projects during construction. With BIM coordination,
the number of work interferences and inconsistencies has been drastically reduced, decreasing delays and unanticipated costs.
