Hanson Professional Services Inc. (Hanson) is providing design engineering services for Alaska Railroad Corporation’s 129-kilometer Northern
Rail Extension from the city of North Pole, Alaska, to Delta Junction, Alaska. This four-phase project will provide a safer, all-weather
transportation option and give the military improved, year-round access to training facilities south of the Tanana River.
Phase 1 construction of the USD 188 million Tanana River Bridge in Salcha will serve vehicular and railroad traffic with a single bimodal deck.
Hanson is addressing significant geotechnical, hydraulic, and seismic issues with the 1,006-meter, 20-span bridge. The project team relied
upon InRoads, Bentley Rail Track, and Project Wise, together with MicroStation that was used to produce the AutoCAD files required by the
client. Bentley software saved approximately USD 141,000 in training, file-conversion, and travel costs, while also enhancing productivity.

Alaska’s Northern Rail Extension: Tanana River Bridge FINALIST
The New NY Bridge will cross the Hudson River to connect Rockland and Westchester counties in New York. Replacing the outmoded
Tappan Zee Bridge, the crossing features twin tower cable-stayed main spans with 1,200-foot center spans. Each bridge carries four
general traffic lanes plus shoulders, extra-wide emergency lanes, and a shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path with scenic overlooks.
The bridge is being designed and built for USD 3. 14 billion by the Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC, consortium, with HDR as lead designer. BIM
methods were used to create an as-designed 3D model. Bentley products included MicroStation, InRoads Suite, RM Bridge, LEAP RC-PIER,
Bentley Map, GEOPAK Civil Engineering Suite, i-model Transformer, Bentley Descartes, AECOsim Building Designer, and Project Wise.
Bentley software enabled a more accurate design with a shorter learning curve.
