Transport for London’s GBP 200 million Structures and Tunnels Investment Portfolio (STIP) will replace, strengthen, and refurbish key
bridges, tunnels, and other structures throughout London. The first phase STIP comprises eight key structures, including the iconic
Hammersmith Flyover and Grade II listed Chiswick Bridge. Staging the work and maintaining traffic mobility will be major challenges.
Ramboll and Parsons Brinckerhoff used Bentley’s laser scanning tools to provide an accurate record of the existing structures. For defect
mark-ups, Bentley Descartes was used to create as-existing record drawings from point-cloud data more quickly than a CAD application.
Project Wise was used to share up-to-date information among the geographically dispersed team members. The resulting high-degree of
coordination and accuracy in 3D designs will reduce clashes, rework, and delivery costs during construction.
When restoration, installation, and widening projects overlap existing roadways, quantifying materials for pavement removal, cutting, and
filling can be complex. The situation is further complicated when the designed and existing alignments are not parallel. To solve this problem,
Planservi Engenharia developed a solution in PowerCivil for Brazil that quickly and accurately generates exact amounts of each material.
The BRL 5 million SP-250 highway restoration project in São Paulo, Brazil, demonstrated how the solution works. The project is over 130
kilometers, with slopes above 10 percent and a vertical drop of over 750 meters. PowerCivil for Brazil accurately prepared earthwork and
pavement demolition quantities in half the time estimated for the work. The solution decreased the number of documents prepared by 60
percent and reduced project costs by 20 percent.
