INNOVATION IN COmmuNICATIONS NETwORkS
on April 27, 2011, an F5 tornado cut a half-mile-wide, five-mile-long path of
destruction through Tuscaloosa, Ala., obliterating thousands of homes and
taking many lives. In the aftermath, comcast, a media, entertainment, and
communications company, asked rainbow Design Services to help assess the
damage and plan for system restoration.
The tornado damaged and/or destroyed outside plant facilities that were
part of comcast’s citywide aerial and underground hybrid-fiber coax network.
rainbow gathered network maps in Bentley software, then overlaid updated
satellite images from Google maps to visualize the network before and after the
tornado. rainbow completed the assessment in roughly 10 days – 80 percent
less time than anticipated.

telecom engineering environment on Microstation for next generation
The objective of this project in Hyderabad, India, was to build an optimal,
configurable, and scalable system to meet the telecom data mapping
requirements of the organization. The application had to be easy to install and
setup, and support a secure, multiuser environment.
The project team used the latest version of microStation along with Bentley
map and oracle 11g to develop generic telecom data model standards and build
out the application. To date, the application has improved productivity by 27
percent and efficiency by 23 percent.
