Martin county community Broadband network
martin county, Fla., leased fiber for a metropolitan
area network that supported the current and future
data needs of 280 public safety, government,
healthcare, and educational agencies. When the
lease was up for renewal, the provider proposed
a five-year deal that escalated from $220,000 the
first year to $1.2 million the last three years. The
county decided to build its own fiber network within
the six months before contract renewal.
The project required 86 miles of outside-plant
fiber-optic network infrastructure to be permitted,
installed, terminated, and tested. Fifty-three sites
were to be integrated into the broadband network
and bidders received scant detail on how to
achieve this. The winning design-build contractor

Fiber Trak and Bentley’s communications software
to quickly design the county-wide network.
Bentley’s communications software enabled pcS
to build an accurate model accessible to county
agencies and departments. The collaborative
process allowed pcS to achieve the ambitious
permit and construction goals and complete the
build-out and changeover ahead of schedule.
