INNOVATION IN BuILDINg
Bolefloor is an industrial-scale manufactured hardwood flooring with curved
lengths that follow a tree’s natural growth. By allowing floorboard layouts
that conserve materials, Bolefloor produces more floors per forest, thus saving
natural resources. To design Bolefloor installations, estonia-based Bole needed
a cAD engine with powerful graphics that could transform complex data into a
natural-looking design that follows curvilinear wood grains.
Bole selected microStation powerDraft to handle computation of cut lines
with multiple geometries and curves, yielding precise results. The display
of numerous raster references enabled designers to follow the wood grain.
microStation reduced the time to digitize boards and design a Bolefloor from
one week to three hours. Timber optimization achieved 84 percent use of
scanned usable timber.
Building Studio Architects Pty Limited
tahmoor conference centre
The Southern Highlands conference and events centre in Australia was
designed to take advantage of its remarkable site. located at the top of a
steep escarpment, the building is cantilevered over the Bargo river, providing
uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness. The building is raised upon
slender V-braced columns to create a sheltered undercroft café.
Building Studio Architects used Bentley Architecture and microStation’s
luxology rendering engine to design, develop, and communicate the project
intent to both the client and local authorities. The built-in rendering engine
enabled real-time rendering without exporting to a dedicated rendering
package, and the photorealistic images ensured approval by local council
