MetroBikelink Bridge over Illinois 159

The St. clair county Transit District is extending the metroBikelink Trail along
the metrolink light rail alignment in Illinois. Thouvenot, Wade & moerchen
( T Wm) designed the $1.2 million bridge over Illinois route 159, a five-lane
collector route, to provide a safe, grade-separated crossing for bicyclists and
pedestrians. The 244-foot-long bridge was part of T Wm’s scope of work to
design major sections of the extension, including four other bridges.
T Wm designed the Illinois route 159 bridge to resemble a classic masonry
arched bridge using pre-cast texturized concrete panels. The team used
GeopAK to develop profiles and cross sections, optimize the embankment
layout, and coordinate work between roadway and structural designers.
STAAD.pro and leAp provided robust and versatile analysis, enabling T Wm to
optimize the structural components.

The $5 million arch pylon cable-stayed bridge under construction in
northwestern South Korea will feature a design that is different from typical
cable-stayed bridges. The 130-meter structure will have the cables installed
at the bottom of the asymmetrical arch tower. The goal of this project was to
reduce issues that may occur during construction by eliminating interferences
between the cables and subsidiary materials.
The usual design approach using 2D drawings was not accurate enough for this
purpose so U3D&c performed 3D modeling and detailing using microStation,
Bentley powerrebar, and Bentley navigator to find and resolve problems. As
a result, the design work proceeded on schedule and cost of correcting errors
during construction was minimized.
