The scope of work for this $15 million project was to design the supporting
structure for a 180-ton-per-hour traveling grate water tube boiler. The
35-meter-high structure required 540 tons of steel. Isgec John Thompson
designed the structure to American Institute of Steel construction standards for
load and resistance factor design.
The project team used S TAAD.pro for design and proSteel for 3D visualization
of the boiler and equipment. The interoperability of proSteel with other 3D
applications made it easy to check for interferences among the structural
members, mechanical equipment, and piping. S TAAD.pro supported the load
and resistance factor design code, which allowed the design to meet the client’s
Kakrapar Atomic power project – ptp project
The Kakrapar Atomic power Station is operated by the nuclear power
corporation of India limited (npcIl). IVrcl designed a pre-treatment plant
(p Tp) in Vyara, India, as part of a plant water system package awarded by
npcIl for Units 3 and 4. With the goal of saving about 30 percent in material
quantities, IVrcl modeled all of the p Tp components as a single unit using 3D
finite element analysis.
S TAAD.pro effectively modeled the more than 300 load combinations. Sloping
ground where the foundation structure was split between two elevations
created huge torsion forces. S TAAD.pro took this into consideration and
helped to create an accurate footing design. This led to 15 percent cost savings
compared to conventional 2D analysis.
