INNOVATION IN ROADS
extension of the Highway 73
Notre Dame de Pins, Canada
passing through the periphery of notre Dame des pins in Québec, the extension
of Highway 73 will provide an alternative route for transportation of goods,
relieve congestion on the existing route, and improve the quality of life for
people living along the highway. Both the environment public Hearing Bureau
and Agricultural land commission authorized the project, but there were local
concerns about impacts on the community.
Transports Quebec initiated public presentations of the project featuring
visualizations of the extension as it passes through the village. microStation
and Inroads were used to validate the designs, check the environmental
impacts, assess visual impacts, and adapt the design as needed. The software
allowed the project team to evaluate quantities, estimate costs, and verify
actual distances of visibility in 3D.
The Ahmedabad-to-Godhra section of national Highway 59 links western
and central India. Wilbur Smith Associates was responsible for design and
construction supervision of a $2 billion project to widen the existing two-lane
highway to four lanes along a 118-kilometer section with bypasses, fly-overs,
underpasses, and major and minor bridges. The 30-month time line was a major
challenge, as was maximizing use of existing roadway.

Wilbur Smith Associates used mXroAD for highway design and S TAAD.pro for
structural design and drawing preparation. The one-time profile optimization
process reduced design time by 50 percent and resulted in $8 million savings
on bituminous works. exporting drawings to AutocAD reduced drafting inputs
by 60 percent and exporting design outputs to microsoft excel reduced time for
quantity calculations by 20 percent.
