The Disaster management centre in Sri lanka uses flood event simulations to
predict at-risk areas. The Survey Department supports this effort by developing
fine-resolution, high-fidelity digital terrain models for incorporation in the flood
risk models. Aerial photographs and scans capture topographic features, which
help locate water catchments and reservoirs.
By building water reservoirs in high-risk areas, this natural resource can be
collected, purified, stored, and distributed to the public. The Survey Department
uses microStation to digitize map contours, microStation GeoGraphics and
Bentley map to edit the maps, and microStation to perform 3D modeling and
create visualizations. Building water purification plants in catchment areas is in
development, but accurate digital terrain models can help make it a reality.
