Assessment of offshore platform for Vibration safety
High vibrations on off-shore platforms lead to equipment and structural damage
as well as discomfort to workers. Vibration analysis and correction in the design
phase avoids costly modifications during commissioning. larsen & Toubro
analyzed vibrations on a gas injection platform housing five reciprocating
compressors on a single deck using Bentley’s SAcS software for analysis and
design of offshore structures.
The entire 3,500-ton platform was analyzed for response to mechanical
vibrating forces induced by various combinations of compressor operations.
SAcS was used to model the jacket with pile support, deck, compressor
modules, and equipment. The maximum vibration found at various locations
exceeded allowable limits so local members were stiffened, and the vibration
results were now within allowable limits.
India’s largest sinter plant, now under construction in the state of orissa, will
mix iron ore, limestone, and coke into solid cakes for use in the production of
steel. larsen & Toubro designed the sinter machine, proportionate bin building,
and sinter cooler foundation using 3D modeling and finite element analysis to
visualize all aspects of the design.

STAAD.pro enabled the team to optimize design and resolve issues in the
early stages, which reduced the total number of man-hours required. Using
traditional 2D design, similar units took almost 12 months to engineer. With
STAAD.pro 3D finite element analysis, total engineering time was reduced to
eight months. nearly 50 percent of engineering was completed in the first four
months, compared only 20 percent using manual methods.
