Villas in the Sky
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Villas in the Sky is a mixed-use, 34-story tower placed at a unique location in
the King Abdullah financial district in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Henning Larsen
Architects sought to ensure a geometry that could be implemented on site and
achieve a building standard that would be seen as a world-class example of
sustainable development with LEED certification.
The building form is a polygon with four equal sides allowing for flexible spaces.
The shifted upper plates create a jagged facade that visually differentiates
it. The first three stories are dedicated to retail and connected to the green
thoroughfare via footbridges and skywalks. The next 14 stories are office space,
and the top 12 floors house 22 residential units. The curtainwall glass facade
has angled panels to allow more transparent glazing while a sloping light-colored cladding provides a shaded interior and reduces energy consumption.

Using Bentley Architecture and GenerativeComponents, the company tested
a variety of architectural solutions for the $68 million landmark. This ensured
consistency and a high level of quality through the entire project—from sketch
to detailed design. Optimizing the building proportions lowered temperatures
by six to eight degrees Celsius. In addition, using Bentley solutions helped a
large project team that had been put together on short notice to quickly and
effectively achieve the objectives.
