BIM: Advanced Brazilian Civil Construction
Based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Matec Engineering traditionally focused on
construction phase projects using plans conceived by its clients. The company
set a goal of increasing productivity and work quality using building information
modeling (BIM) as a tool for critical analysis, error detection, cost optimization,
and coordination of resources that will improve performance on complex
projects with short deadlines.
Matec’s use of BIM enabled it to establish a simultaneous engineering process
between internal engineering areas—including supplies, planning, costs, and
projects—and external designers. Project teams began redesigning all projects
in 3D and sending critical analysis reports as 3D PDFs. To date, the firm’s new
approach has resulted in savings of up to 40 percent in time, 30 percent in
materials, and thousands of dollars.

Implementing BIM required changing the mindset of Matec project team
members as well as the external designers who receive critical analysis reports.
Matec customized Bentley Architecture, Bentley Building Mechanical Systems,
Bentley Building Electrical Systems, Bentley Interference Manager, and Bentley
Navigator to integrate with other systems and nomenclatures.
