Reliable Point Cloud Modeling of Substations
The goal of this $125,000 project in Essen, Germany, was to deliver facility
models and diverse cross sections of existing substations to easily show
where parts must be removed, replaced, or refurbished to meet fire-protection
requirements such as modern sprinkler systems. 3D laser scanning technology
provided the best solution for facilitating this process.
Used in conjunction with MicroStation, the Pointools Vortex API engine was
ideally suited to handle the extensive point cloud data sets produced by the
surveying technology. As a result, the multiutility company gained a complete
model and cross sections that can be used for further planning purposes.

The Innovation of Transformer Substation
The $6 million Ningdong-Shandong transmission line is the world’s first 660
kilovolt high-voltage direct current power transmission link in China. The goals
for the project included exploring new approaches to transformer substation
design, improving the accuracy and efficiency of design and installation, and
lowering operation and maintenance costs.
The institute adopted a 3D design approach for the first time using Bentley
Substation, Bentley Architecture, Bentley Structural Modeler, GEOPAK, and
MicroStation. Bentley Substation simplified the task of designing the wire
couplings. The integrated 3D model aided in clash detection, material take-offs,
and 2D drawing generation.
