During construction of a five-star hotel in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the owner
decided to install a 32-by- 28 meter ballroom. The decision came too late
to modify the roller compacted concrete column to withstand the moment
generated by a 32-meter beam. Engineers at McDonald Steel Building Products
were challenged to find a cost-effective and timely solution.
The design team used STAAD.Pro to analyze the vertical and horizontal loads
and design a steel frame truss support that would release the moment. Because
horizontal load could not exceed 150 kilonewtons, the truss was designed with
both roller and pin supports. S TAAD.Pro saved a minimum of 160 man-hours on
this challenging project and helped meet a tight deadline.
Office & Energy Centre, Ongc Ltd.
The $70 million Ongc office complex in Rajarhat, India, is an unconventional
building with multilevel office floors in each of two elevated tubular structures,
which are different heights and at right angles to each other. The vertical core
structure common to both horizontal tubes has a larger cross section than the
other two core structures.
The building’s geometry and proportions presented unusual structural design
challenges, particularly with respect to vibrations. S TAAD.Pro’s 3D model of the
building optimized structural weight, and its advanced analysis feature reduced
the engineering hours needed to evaluate several design iterations and analyze
different combinations of complex loading on the tubular structure.
