The ice hockey arena in Dehradun is India’s first. The $22.5 million facility features
a state-of-the-art swimming pool and a stadium for basketball, volleyball,
table tennis, weightlifting, judo, wrestling, and gymnastics. Among the design
challenges for a structure covering 12,320 square meters were the hilly terrain,
the rink’s arched roof, and the semicircular roofs needed for other areas.
STAAD.Pro was used for modeling and analysis of the entire structural system,
including analyzing all possible load cases combinations for the terrain. STAAD.
Pro’s optimization approach enabled engineers to analyze the weight and
depth of the steel needed for maximum strength and safety. This resulted in
considerable cost savings with regard to the amount of steel needed.

BL Plaza Carpark Building
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Dr. Marwan Jabakhanji was chosen to redesign a five-story, 420-car parking
structure for BL Plaza in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The $3.5 million structure was
originally designed with precast hollow core panels and double Ts for the ramp
and horizontal sections. Jabakhanji converted the structure to a post-tension
slab design to better manage tight spacing, avoid the need for road closure
permits, and eliminate the use of cranes.
RAM Concept was used to model the structure, provide multiple design
iterations, and accurately estimate costs to ensure feasibility. The final bill of
quantities estimate convinced the developer and contractor of the cost-saving
benefits of the post-tension design. The continuous ramp slab specified for
better structural integrity also resulted in additional parking spaces.
