In April 2010, construction began on a new $20 million community center and
library for residents of Vallentuna, a municipality in east central Sweden’s
Stockholm County. Byggnadstekniska Byrån’s task was to produce structural
solutions, including structural design, static calculations, and drawings.
The architect’s unique designs challenged the firm to create realistic models
while staying true to the design. Structural Modeler was used early in the
design process to create a 3D model that helped visualize the structure with its
irregular and complex design, which provided an immediate understanding of
the geometry and associated complexities. MicroStation was used to produce

New Business Center Interport
The New Business Center Interport in Trento, Italy, is a logistics hub for storage
and handling of cargo headed for markets in central and northern Italy. The
reception hall, bar, and auditorium are part of a 10,000-square-meter area
representing an investment of 140 million euro. The prominent building was
designed with transparent curtain walls, allowing an outside view of the
The complex building geometry accommodates the arching shape of the
auditorium. Steel was chosen for the principal structure to lighten the load
of the roof-top garden. A 3D model was developed using ProSteel to present
the design for review. Drawing sheets with more than 1, 200 positions were
extracted from the model along with CAD files for cutting and drilling of beams
for error-free processing.
