Arup Singapore Pte Ltd
Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort
Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands resort integrates a waterfront promenade with
meetings and conventions facilities, events plaza, multilevel retail arcade,
and two theaters. A wave-form podium roof and canopy structure encloses
the buildings. Arup’s Singapore office delivered the structural design and
documentation from a fully coordinated 3D model, along with steelwork
portions delivered as fabrication-level models.
This innovative workflow saved a significant amount of time in redrawing
the model each time a modification was made. The 3D modeling and analysis
improved the accuracy and coordination of documentation, increased the
efficiency and number of design iterations, and reduced the construction
schedule by approximately two to three months due to the major steelwork
being handed over as fabrication models.
2010 BE INSPIRED AWARDS
Starting with one designer who had experience with Bentley’s structural
applications, the office expanded to 15 modelers at the project’s peak. Arup
offices in Boston, Hong Kong, and Melbourne also worked concurrently on parts
of the model. Bentley’s capabilities for integrating distributed models enabled
the company to divide the project work but then bring the parts back together
for design review and clash resolution. GenerativeComponents was used in
combination with the structural applications to parametrically model specific
complex elements in the steel structures.
