Chennai Bypass is an access-controlled expressway connecting four radial
national highways around Chennai, India. To decongest city traffic, portions
of the highway elevate over existing local roads. The project included design
of 3.6 kilometers of elevated highway with eight lanes over a bridge, a river
bridge on immediate approach, and one trumpet-style interchange. Total capital
investment was $100 million.
RITES used MXROAD alignment design software with string modeling
capabilities to design the roadway. MXROAD provided designers with the option
of using one master string and multiple associated strings. This first-of-its-kind
project in India has eased traffic jams and reduced air and water pollution.

Each year Traffic Planning and Design performs hundreds of traffic impact
studies, each requiring up to 100 detailed graphical representations called
schematic figures. To reduce the time and errors associated with this manual
process, Traffic Planning and Design invested $30,000 to develop a method for
importing traffic impact study data into MicroStation.
The simple-to-learn Schematic Figures program runs in a custom MicroStation
workspace with toolbars, print drivers, level library, cells, title blocks, text
styles, and configurations. The program reduces production time from one hour
to five minutes per schematic for a 92 percent efficiency improvement.
