Mumbai’s overcrowded railway carries 50 percent of the 14 million trips daily,
operating more than 2,300 train services on a 319-kilometer route. To meet the
growing demand, the Ministry of Railways must expand capacity with the least
possible disturbance to existing operations. RI TES is developing the conceptual
design for an operationally efficient alignment.
The $3.4 billion project includes integrated suburban stations as well as new
elevated platforms positioned above existing platforms and connected through
common concourses. RITES used Bentley Rail Track to optimize the alignment
within the existing railway right of way and highly congested corridor. After
several revisions to ensure construction feasibility, the alignment design was
completed in four months.

Union Pacific Railroad has published about 10,000 pages of CADD files with
graphical representations of railroad schematics in five-mile sections, including
a track view, point facilities (switches, structures, detectors, and crossings),
and span facilities (rails, ties, surfaces, curves, grades, tracks, and speeds).
This project created a process to gather data from the database, generate
graphics in a prescribed format, and produce a page layout that can be viewed
via the web. The project team set up a workflow to define the master templates
and rules needed to place and publish the database graphics. Using automated
tools developed for MicroStation, the project team was reduced from 15 people
to five team members.
