The Drum Plant at BHP Billiton’s Mt. Whaleback, Australia, Beneficiation Plant
required an upgrade of existing screens, feeders, launders, and associated
equipment. Proteus EPCM Engineers’ initial assignment in the $20 million open
pit surface iron ore mining operation project was to design two separate circuits
to add more flexibility into the design.
The project team used Bentley Structural, PlantSpace, Bentley Navigator,
and Bentley View for all mechanical, structural, piping, electrical, and
instrumentation design. The 3D design allowed the client to see the entire
circuit and to see how the various components of the circuit could be removed
for maintenance. Using 3D modeling allowed the concept design to proceed
quickly and improved both production and maintenance.

Baosteel 3D Design Project of 2030 Unit in Cleaning Section
Baosteel Engineering & Technology Group is implementing 3D integrated
design on a demonstration project for the new Baosteel 2030 continuous
annealing unit in the cleaning section of a cold rolling mill in Shanghai, China.
The project aims to improve engineering design and equipment purchasing
management, reduce design time, improve design quality, and eliminate
interferences during construction.
Baosteel is using MicroStation and PlantSpace to standardize workflows,
establish a component library, and achieve consistency between 3D and 2D
representations. With 3D modeling of equipment, piping, and supports, and
extraction of 2D drawings and pipeline isometrics, more precise material take-offs saved the company about $6.69 million in material costs.
