Located close to Finland’s border with Sweden, the Kemi Mine is the only
chromium mine in the European Union. Since recent seismic research indicates
that the mine has enough resources for hundreds of years to come, Outokumpu
plans to upgrade mine productivity from 1.2 to 2.7 metric tons per annum via a
concentrator expansion for the underground mine.
Outotec Oyj was contracted to evolve the client’s engineering company from
creating very detailed 2D designs to designing the entire plant in 3D. Using
MicroStation, Outotec Oyj rendered a 3D model of the plant, which allowed
stakeholders to easily and swiftly comment on the design solutions. Capital
expenditures for the project will total $110 million.

This project involved the construction of a coal-handling plant that receives coal
from an underground mine portal conveyor. The scope included the electrical
design of all drives and instrumentation throughout the plant with the goal of
automated control and monitoring. The $65 million project had an extremely
short deadline, minimal resources, and tight budget.
The PACE Engineers design team created standardized templates and built an
automated drawing generation system on top of promis•e, which led to the
elimination of copy-and-paste errors that resulted in savings of up to 60 percent
on drafting time, reduction of rework for design engineers by 30 to 40 percent,
and an estimated 50 percent reduction on overhead administration during
construction. The system also eased redrafting of on-site design changes.
