LPG Treatment Unit
The goal of this project in Mangalore, India, was to increase crude processing
capacity from 12 to 15 million metric tons per year and upgrade the refinery to
meet Euro III/IV specifications. Installation of an additional coker LPG treatment
unit was included as part of the facility upgrade.
After being awarded the conceptual design contract for this project, Larsen &
Toubro had limited time to release the preliminary material take-offs. Plant Wise
visualized the location of and avoided interferences with pipes that were
coming from another unit. The firm reduced expenditures by increasing the
project team’s productivity.

Piping MTO Optimization
Faridabad, India
Larsen & Toubro’s design and engineering center in Faridabad, India, was given
just two weeks to prepare material take-offs for pre-bid engineering on the
Coker Hydrotreating Unit of the MRPL refinery. Working with Plant Wise for the
first time, the project team used the automatic pipe routing feature to optimize
piping quantities across various plant layouts.
The project team compared the accuracy and traceability of the Plant Wise M TO
estimates with those generated using conventional methods to select the most
efficient layout design. The estimators found that the Plant Wise layout was
more efficient—saving about 1,637 meters of pipe length and 435 elbows—
relative to the conventional estimate. This layout not only conserved materials,
but also reduced heat losses to the environment.
