The M1 Westlink connects the M1 to the M2 and M3 Motor ways in Belfast,
United Kingdom, providing access to Belfast city center, port of Belfast, and
Belfast city airport. The 12-kilometer upgrade of the M1 westlink and M2
Motorway was commissioned to reduce congestion and improve journey
time. The scope included replacing the roden street Footbridge with a
pedestrian bridge.
Arup used Bentley structural to define bridge geometry, model the bridge
structure, export to/import from highway analysis and design software, model
and amend steelwork member sizes, and extract more than 140 fully annotated
drawing views. Coordination in 3d with other design disciplines allowed Arup to
extract curved concrete member profiles for accurate reinforcement design and
scheduling using GEOpAK.

Princes Dock Causeway Bridge

Princes Dock Causeway Bridge is one of many new structures designed to
extend the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, providing an additional 1. 4 miles of
navigable waterway from Leeds Liverpool Canal to Canning dock on the
Liverpool waterfront in Great Britain. Arup provided structural and civil
engineering design services for the $20 million structure.
Initial studies of the bridge geometry and façade were undertaken using
a combination of Microstation and Adobe Elements. The Microstation
photomatch tool aligned the CAd model with the photograph, which enabled
designers to quickly generate a number of different design options—resulting
in an efficient and cost-effective final design. project drawings were extracted
from the 3d model generated in Microstation using Bentley structural.
