CONNECTING PROJECT TEAMS
DOE B&W Pantex
MicroStation Drafting Request System
Amarillo, Texas, United States
Tracking and coordinating drafting packages between the configuration
management and CADD departments had been an ongoing issue at the
Department of Energy B&W Pantex Facility in Amarillo, Texas. To improve
communications between the departments, a configuration management
programmer designed the Drafting Request System using a VBA tie-in to link
MicroStation libraries to Microsoft Access.
The new system keeps detailed records for all project drawing updates and
communicates in real time to provide management in any department with up-to-date information. The team can now track all activities being performed on
any given project. Normal operations that took four hours per drafting request
now take 10 minutes. The system also reduced paper printing by a third.
Redevelopment Station Area Utrecht–A Complete Makeover
Located in the center of the Netherlands, Utrecht hosts the country’s main
railway junction Utrecht Central Station. The number of travelers through the
station is expected to double in the next 20 years to 100 million passengers
per year. To expand capacity and add amenities, the municipality (Gemeente
Utrecht) tasked the project organization station (POS) department with
long-term redevelopment of the station.
The CAD department of POS has about 30,000 technical documents, but no
metadata was available to help search for proper document versions. POS
implemented Project Wise so now all drawing attributes and linked project
attributes are stored and managed by Project Wise in an Oracle database. This
has significantly improved access to documents for internal staff and external
partners, with time savings of up to 30 percent.
