COMMUNICATING THROUGH VISUALIZATION
Product Development and Animation of Ductrunners
XGI was contracted by Reduct NV in Belgium to develop three special
ductrunners as well as a 3D animation that visualizes how the ductrunners
work. As these devices are pulled through underground pipes, they continuously
record their movement with sensitive electronic sensors. Afterward, the data
is read by computer software that interprets the information as a 3D path,
accurately representing the location of the underground pipe.
The ductrunners were designed using MicroStation to accommodate special
requirements for measuring small diameter pipes and short bending radii
without compromising the volume necessary for the electronics. MicroStation,
which provided functionality for modeling, animation, rendering, and some post-processing using VBA, was also used to produce the 3D animation video.
By applying the 3D capabilities of the Bentley software to our projects, I have greater
confidence in the design, both in terms of the quality of discrete packages and the
way in which those packages fit together. My team is genuinely excited and
inspired by the possibilities afforded by the technology.
