COMMUNICATING THROUGH VISUALIZATION

Liverpool Canal Link–Pier Head
British Waterways completed a £ 22 million canal link to connect the Liverpool &
Leeds Canal with the South Docks in Liverpool, United Kingdom. The link adds
1. 4 miles of navigable waterway to the 126-mile-long canal. The route includes
two locks, open U-shaped channels, tunnels, and culverts. Each structure has
complex geometry constructed using reinforced in situ concrete. Within the Pier
Head, granite-clad structures blend in with the historic site.
The project team used solid shape 3D modeling in MicroStation and TriForma
to design the complex shapes. The 3D model provided flawless transfer of
information to contractors, reducing errors and wastage on concrete pours and
granite cutting. Creation of 3D PDFs allowed the model to be used as a visual
tool for getting client agreement on finishes and canal structure geometry.

Proposed Recovery Services Center
The Salvation Army’s $22 million Substance Abuse Recovery Facility in
Queensland, Australia, will incorporate a detox center, chapel, administrative
and conference facilities, accommodations, recreation spaces, dining areas,
and market gardens. The design brief also called for sustainable design
that featured passive cooling systems, solar and rainwater harvesting,
recyclable treated sewage and gray water, and environmentally sensitive
PL Architects submitted a site plan that emulates the local coastal sand dunes
and wetlands, with built forms nestled into the leeward face of the mounds.
Designing in a 3D environment allowed the architects to explore ideas prior
to producing final presentation images. The speculative nature of the project
required the sophisticated graphical representation to be produced cost
effectively, and Bentley Architecture permitted the firm to accomplish this.
