COMMUNICATING THROUGH VISUALIZATION
The goal of this $4 million project in Canada was to provide adequate structural
bearing support for an above-ground storage tank column built in an area
with poor soil conditions. The tank imposed extremely large column loads on
a localized area where the soil bearing strength was poor. To determine the
load effects on the steel column base plates and subgrade, the project team
evaluated several baseplate alternatives.
STAAD.Pro enabled the designers to model the steel base plate-soil interaction.
The model allowed for visualization of the finite element analysis results,
stress concentrations, and deflected structure shapes for each baseplate
configuration. The animated graphics provided a dynamic demonstration of
plate behavior under a variety of loading combinations, which allowed for
multiple alternatives to be quickly analyzed and evaluated.

EAT Apartment–Public Space
Renovation of the public space in the EAT apartment building in Taipei, Taiwan,
required input from multiple stakeholders in the corporation. The architectural
designer demonstrated how the renovated space would look using 3D images
generated by Bentley technology.
The $110,000 project also had a limited budget, so material selections became
an important issue. The 3D images illustrated the appearance and cost of
various materials, enabling the client to make cost-effective choices.
