INNOVATION IN ROADS
Traversing mountainous terrain to connect 13 villages in Karnataka, India,
the existing 63-kilometer, single-lane road had substandard alignment and
severely deteriorated pavement. The goal for this $35 million project was to
derive tangible economic benefits through travel time reduction, road safety
enhancement, and vehicle operating cost savings.
Given the constraints posed by the steep terrain, the alignment design was
the single most onerous task, involving several refinements using MXROAD.
Determining the optimal road centerline was also crucial, given the multiple
switchbacks. The MXROAD 3D modeling tools enabled rapid and accurate
alignment design, making it possible to quickly achieve the best fit.
