INNOVATION IN ROADS
RITES Ltd. (Highways)
Feasibility Study, PPR for Ganga Express Driveway
A growing city with a population of about 1. 8 million, Patna has been built on the
thick alluvial deposits of the Ganga River basin. The city is surrounded on three
sides by rivers—the Ganga, Sone, and Poonpun—and lies in a high-risk zone
for earthquakes. This heterogeneous topography made the $458 million Ganga
Express Driveway a unique and challenging project.
The highway will have a four- to six-lane divided carriageway with service
roads and other associated facilities. To develop a feasible layout for the entire
21 kilometers along the Ganga, RITES explored several alternative routes based
on reconnaissance survey and available digital terrain models of the area.
MXROAD optimized the alignment and minimized the earthwork to effectively
control the project cost.
Scott Wilson India Pvt Ltd
DPR for 80-Kilometer Six-Lane Freeway
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The road from Addis Ababa to Adama City is one of Ethiopia’s most important
transportation links. It connects with the main highway at Adama, which in turn
connects with Djibouti Port—the main hub for imports and exports. The existing
two-lane road passes through mountainous terrain and urban stretches with
steep gradients. A new $665 million six-lane freeway will provide improved road
geometry and safety, with grade-separated interchanges for five towns.
Scott Wilson India provided an economic feasibility study, detailed engineering
design, environmental impact assessment, alignment alternatives evaluation,
and tolling strategies. Selecting the best alignment involved numerous trials
using satellite imagery and field setting outs. With MXROAD’s 3D modeling
capabilities, it was possible to quickly create design alternatives, make
refinements, and achieve an alignment designed for speeds of up to 120
kilometers per hour.
