INNOVATION IN ROADS
Maryland State Highway
MD 2/4 Southern Connector Boulevard
Located in Lusby, Md., this $7.5 million project provided a safe intersection for
a new county roadway that tied into existing state route MD 765. A two-lane
roundabout was chosen as the best alternative to handle the traffic volume.
From that roundabout, a new 1,000-foot connector road between MD 765 and
MD 2/4 improved access without adding to congestion.
Although both projects were scheduled to open simultaneously, the county was
well into design when the state started its project. The state used MicroStation
and InRoads to develop a design quickly and Project Wise to coordinate
among the state, county, and multiple contractors, which allowed designers
to exchange files seamlessly throughout the project. This enabled the team to
complete the design on time at significant savings due to reduced man-hours.
Ministere de l’Ecologie
Project L2, Urban Motorways A507
The Ministry of Ecology initiated this project in Marseille, France, to visualize
the impact on the environment of the new urban motorway called Project L2.
As the second largest city in France, Marseille boasts more than 1 million
inhabitants, so a requirement of the new motorway was to bypass local traffic
and shorten the commute between the east and west ends of the city.
A major challenge for the project team was designing two interchanges at
different levels within a 4-kilometer area. The designers used MXROAD to
create a 3D model of the project, adding hydrology and interchanges. A 3D
video was created from the model to show stakeholders the impact of the
motorway and aid in decision making.
