INNOVATION IN RAIL AND TRANSIT
RITES Ltd (Urban Transport)
Interim Consultant for the Proposed East-West Metro Corridor
The East-West Kolkata Metro Corridor Project in Kolkata, India, runs from
Howrah Maidan to Bidhannagar (known locally as Salt Lake City). The Howrah
Station is also the terminal of the Eastern and Southeastern Railways. The
proposed East-West Metro alignment project encompassed a two-railway
junction, the Howrah Bridge over the Hooghly River, and an historic area of
Kolkata’s central business district.
The project team was challenged to design an alignment that minimized local
site disturbance and adhered to land use requirements. Planning the alignment
below Hooghly River was particularly challenging because Howrah Bridge was
only 300 meters away. Use of MXRAIL (now Bentley Rail Track) helped the team
complete the optimum alignment design in a timely fashion.
