MicroStation and Bentley Navigator significantly contributed to the team’s
success in overcoming project challenges. Bentley solutions improved
online collaboration and enabled immediate feedback during the comment/
review cycle through the use of visualization tools. The 3D model served as
the primary tool for walkthroughs, constructability reviews, interference
checking, and general communication with other organizations.
Located near gillette, Wyo., this new $1 billion-plus power plant will provide
a highly reliable, environmentally sound, and economical resource of electric
power to support the region’s growing economy. In addition, it will burn
locally mined Powder River Basin coal, further supporting the area economy.
Dry Fork Station Unit 1 is a 420-megawatt gross, subcritical, pulverized coal-fired plant. Powder River Basin coal is delivered to the station by overland
conveyor to on-site storage silos.
The Unit 1 project presented a complex industrial design challenge with a
large project team spread over many organizations, locations, and design
platforms. The goal was to develop an optimized design, incorporating
advanced power generation and environmental control technology through
extensive collaboration with the project owner, major equipment suppliers,
and constructor. Meeting the overall project quality, cost, and schedule goals
was highly dependent on the quality and efficiency of the design/engineering
process and on the deliverables provided to the constructor and the client.
Team participants and equipment suppliers met frequently online to review
each phase of the design and rapidly provide input. The team reduced the
quantity of comment drawing releases through collaborative model reviews
using Bentley Navigator. Of the estimated 7,600 physical-plant drawings
issued, 85 percent were eliminated, saving thousands of man-hours due
to decreased document handling, printing, and mailing. The project moved
smoothly into the construction phase on schedule, with an optimized design
and the necessary foundation for efficient construction and operation.
