INNOVATION IN OIL AND GAS
Marathon Oil Corporation
Pipeline Expansion Project – cP
Canton, Ohio, United States
the primary challenge the design team faced on this project, which called for
expanding Marathon Oil’s pipeline capacity at its Canton, Ohio, facilities, was
fitting all necessary equipment into a tight area. To resolve the situation, the
team capitalized on the innovative capabilities of 3D modeling technology.
The visualization software allowed the team to quickly locate any problem
areas where pipes and equipment might be too close together to operate
properly. The team deployed MicroStation to visualize the layout of the pipeline
facilities and enable the project team to better understand the project.

Petrobras (Petroleo Brasileiro SA)
Sistema de Gerenciamento de Frotas
An increase in fleet traffic in campos Basin, Brazil, led Petrobras to devise
a fleet-management system that would increase efficiency. This $1 million
system would help Petrobras optimize ship routes, monitor fleet activity,
increase its environmental awareness, and reduce costs. The system
increased fleet optimization by 10 percent, saving $160 million a year.
Using MicroStation and MDL programming skills in conjunction with a
committed team and a shared view of project benefits, Petrobras employed the
fleet management system to monitor all ships in real time. A GPS onboard each
ship transmits ship coordinates to a PC that transmits these coordinates to an
oil platform. These coordinates are relayed to land using an optic fiber.
