INNOVATION IN UTILITIES AND COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS
Distribution Design Engineering training
Facing a shortage of skilled cAD users in western Australia, Western Power’s
CAD Group partnered with Bentley to develop a customized training module.
This training enabled the company to maintain the consistent and productive
use of MicroStation and MicroStation PowerDraft by its technical staff for
the design and estimating of underground residential designs, reinforcement
designs, and customer-funded designs.
Bentley’s training has allowed the organization to leverage the use of
MicroStation to produce construction documentation automatically through
the use of customized tools. Furthermore, it has improved productivity by
providing staff members with the skills they need to take full advantage of the
specific design tools and standards used by Western Power. As a result, the
trained designers are immediately productive.

Transmission Design Engineering Training
Western Power will be training all of its current design team in the use
of MicroStation V8 XM as the organization transitions to this release of
MicroStation. The conversion of all drawings is being done in-house and new
CAD standards, cells, and the use of color in design and model/paper space
are being incorporated into the company’s work practices.
Through its use of Bentley training, the firm has been able to develop power
MicroStation users and mentors to enhance communications between users
within different disciplines. Efficiencies through good cell use and reference
files are being achieved through the collaborative method. In addition, simple
efficiencies like using colored phases and earths on the primary and secondary
drawings have reduced the time it takes to check designs.
