national Plan for Mitigations of Acoustic Pollution – reggio Emilia Project
the reggio Emilia Project will reduce noise pollution on italy’s national
highway. The project will bring the transportation artery in line with the
framework of Italy’s noise-pollution laws. The plan calls for 300 noise
mitigation projects to be put in place during the next 15 years, covering 2,850
kilometers of infrastructure and affecting 14 regions and 706 municipalities.
The main challenge in designing the project, which covers 20 kilometers of
infrastructure, was producing a large number of drawings in a short time
frame. Autostrade Per l’Italia overcame this challenge by deploying Bentley
MXROAD to create a customized application called ARENIUM. The application
provides users a single access point to engineering data and seamless
interaction with Bentley and third-party software.

After more than 50 years of service, reconstruction of road n210 in the Dutch
province of South Holland became necessary. However, the area’s soft peat
subsoil precluded a typical highway foundation of sand, granulate, and asphalt
from being laid as the road would simply sink into the ground. As a solution,
engineers planned to construct a dense grid of concrete piles topped with a
mattress of granulate. The mattress supports the road on a stable platform by
distributing the load evenly to the piles.
Bentley MXROAD enabled engineers to work with large volumes of
information and provide accurate results in a short time. The software
allowed engineers to fine tune the road’s alignment near roundabouts and
junctions as well as calculate the height of foundation piles and thickness of
the granulate mattress.
