A New High-Speed Railway Line in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria

this 640-kilometer railway line is located on a 1,000-meter-high plateau in
the Atlas Mountains of North Africa approximately 140 kilometers from the
coast of Algeria. Although the area along this new track is lightly populated, the
construction of this line is critical to regional economic development and will link
to the new city of Boughzoul (with a future population of 250,000 inhabitants).
The project tasks for the consortium of Bernard and Obermeyer ranged
from preliminary design studies and bid invitations to all geotechnical and
topographical components. The deliverables included track design, signaling,
and railway-station design, operating program development, bridge design for
rail and road, and realignment of existing roads.
Bernard used Bentley Rail Track (InRail) to design its sections of the new line,
requiring 180 types of automatically generated cross-section templates and
producing some 320 plan drawings. The use of Bentley Rail Track allowed
the design team to react quickly to any project changes. Bernard was also
responsible for designing 28 heavy bridges with spans greater than 100
meters, 210 road bridges, 90 kilometers of roadway, and 260 kilometers of
railway design – all within 22 months. Overall, Bentley solutions saved the
consortium about 25 percent in project time.

the high-speed rail line from Madrid to the French border is on the list of
priority transportation infrastructure projects in the Trans-European Transport
Network. The critical section is a 621-kilometer-long, high-speed rail link
between Madrid and Barcelona that will cut travel time by 50 percent and will
be used by up to 7. 8 million passengers by 2011.

side. For the vertical design, the new line had to cross below Metro Line 1 but
avoid interference with both Ronda de Mig and Metro Line 5.
The primary goal of this project was to redefine the geometry of the existing
railway corridor consisting of six Iberian-gauge tracks in order to place within
the same space the two new standard-gauge high-speed lines without
blocking the current railway traffic. The project consisted of 1,954 meters

The creation of the tunnel was combined with a rebuild of the current
track layout. Bentley Rail Track played a critical role in accommodating
existing railway traffic and maintaining the railway operation system while
construction progressed. The geometry calculation capacity and flexibility of
Bentley Rail Track analyzed the best geometric solution for temporary and final
track and turnout locations.
