Camp Cardinal Boulevard is a 1.7-mile, two-lane, divided,
curvilinear roadway in Iowa that includes a recreational
trail, a seven-acre regional retention pond, 11,000 linear
feet of reinforced concrete storm sewer pipe with 118 storm
sewer structures, 7,500 linear feet of ductile iron water main,
275,000 cubic yards of class 10 borrow, and 48,000
square yards of 10-inch Portland concrete.

MicroStation and the GEOPAK suite significantly reduced the
time required to design this and other projects by eliminating
tedious tasks ranging from creating and filling out project
tabulation sheets to creating a complex site design model.
By using their powerful, interactive design tools, routines that
used to take the firm hours to accomplish now take minutes.
The software brought the Camp Cardinal Boulevard project
cost down from $6.5 million to $4.6 million. In addition, the
software improved the overall quality of the end product.
A six-lane road approximately 270 kilometers long is being
designed to help free India’s Delhi roads of huge numbers
of trucks and buses. The project encompasses 46 bridges,
207 underpasses, 79 culverts, and eight interchanges. Land
acquisition was envisioned as the main constraint of the project
because it involved 1,860 hectares of land from five districts
involving 98 villages. Thus, it was essential to finalize the
horizontal alignment as quickly as possible so the land
acquisition work could begin.
Bentley’s MX software suite was used to help facilitate the
alignments. In addition, Bentley’s STAAD software provided
detailed structural analysis and design that not only helped
overcome the hurdle of land acquisition, but also saved a
substantial amount of time, energy, and cost by reducing the
number of design repetitions.
