United States Courthouse dewberry
Dewberry teamed with Koetter/Kim & Associates Inc. to plan
and design a new $87 million federal courthouse for the
General Services Administration in Rockford, Illinois. The new
facility will accommodate the 10-year space requirements
of the District Court and court-related agencies on a site large
enough to also accommodate its 30-year expansion requirements. The courthouse will house five courtrooms, additional
clerks’ space, and 52 secure interior parking spaces below
the building.
The use of Bentley’s BIM solutions enabled the team members
to move past their own disciplines’ viewpoint to see the
interactions of the complete building. The unique aspect of
this project and the use of BIM also allowed Dewberry to
flatten the hierarchy of design to production so a member
usually assigned to a specific area like design was now also
charged with getting those elements placed into the model.

FINALIST
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is standardizing
the design of its military facilities and has designated eight
district offices as Centers of Standardization to develop
and maintain the standard designs. The challenge was to
effectively and efficiently portray the interior and exterior
components of the facilities, interior spatial relationships,
and integration of the structural and mechanical systems
within the architectural models.
The MicroStation visualization and animation tools, Bentley
Architecture, Bentley Structural, and other Bentley BIM
solutions were the key ingredients in capitalizing on the
increased efficiencies provided by BIM across the planning,
design, construction, and facilities management phases. The
ability to have each discipline produce separate design BIM
models and reference each others’ work in real-time strongly
promoted a spirit of collaboration and a rapid production of
design parameters and team design decisions.
