WINNER Halff Associates, Inc
halff Associates is a multidiscipline, full-service
organization that doubled in size in the past five
years. It needed to quickly train new hires while
keeping existing employees current on the latest
technology. Though the firm has in-house staff
who provide some training, demand for instruction
exceeded their ability to provide it, and the
required expertise wasn’t always available.
halff employed Bentley’s Enterprise Training
Subscription (ETS) to address its training needs
in a timely, cost-effective manner. A blend of
training options was used, including on-site and
off-site training as well as instructor-led and self-paced distance learning. This initiative has allowed
halff to stay competitive in the midst of its rapid
growth by training entry-level employees to do
more advanced design and enabling the firm to
embrace advanced technologies such as BIM.
At the beginning of 2006, halff analyzed its
training needs and identified basic MicroStation
and GEOPAK as the primary area of focus. The
company also saw the need to inform its users
about the availability of training and educate
them on how to use it. halff used its intranet site
to communicate scheduling and participation
requirements.
Quantifying the ROI in training is not easy, but
halff was able to identify specific gains. New
employees historically took six months to become
productive with MicroStation without any
dedicated training. Now, new employees are
expected to be productive after their first month.
Using ETS freed up 352 hours of staff time that
could be devoted to other CADD efforts. Use of
existing Bentley licenses increased because of
the increase in trained users. And, finally, halff
was able to quickly start using Bentley Building
software in anticipation that the U. S. Army Corps
of Engineers will soon require use of BIM software on its projects.
