This category involves the use of Bentley products to develop an IT strategy that
enables the organization to cost-effectively adopt new cutting-edge technology,
ease software administration and procurement, and dramatically improve the return
on interoperability and investment.

VECO was challenged to provide a globally distributed environment for engineering and project-based initiatives, which resulted in the development
of a new platform to execute distributed projects.
As Bentley’s distributed DigitalPlant environment
developed, VECO required a new and more robust
IT infrastructure to support this new technology.
This new replicated environment, when used in
conjunction with Project Wise and AutoPLANT,
effectively provides an EPC firm with the ability
to share the scope of a project between many
satellite offices. The new environment consists of
four new blade servers at each regional office; a
NetApp for data storage at each regional office;
more than 300 workstations over multiple regions;
Bentley’s Project Wise application; and Bentley
DigitalPlant.
The impetus for the new infrastructure was VECO’s
work on the Russian Vankor oil field development
project in western Siberia. VECO was tasked with
providing live files, models, databases, and data
sharing across its global organization in order to
complete the project faster that traditionally
executed projects.
VECO used a standard IT/engineering build to
deploy all Bentley software, including custom-
ization and configurations. Time spent configuring
individual workstations decreased dramatically
and has enabled project teams in different loca-
tions to work together on any aspect of a project.
A custom application enables VECO to extract
Project Wise attribute data and Bentley DigitalPlant
design data and format the data into client reports.
This reduces the need for multiple reporting services
and eliminates the need to manually format the
reports. Document backup and recovery has been
automated, eliminating the need for tape backup.
The improved IT infrastructure makes it easier to
duplicate and launch new projects quickly.
