The purpose of this project was to study the feasibility of integrating waterworks to handle emergencies. There are 14 waterworks supplying 13
cities in the Mumbai, India, metropolitan area.
After heavy rains shut down one of the waterworks and caused supply disruptions, a proposal
was made to interconnect all 14 waterworks. The
thinking was that, in the event of a disaster to one
or more waterworks, this approach would enable
water to be diverted from another source.
A feasibility study is being conducted based on a
newly created hydraulic model of the area’s
water supply systems.
Bentley’s WaterCAD, Darwin Calibrator, Darwin
Designer, and SewerCAD were used to model the
various waterworks and consider scenarios for con-

disaster mitigation work easily and with high precision. WaterCAD provided a tool to help everyone understand likely risks in the water supply system and presented remedial measures to prevent
hardships to the 32 million people in the area. ;
