Carollo Engineers, P.C.
Carollo Engineers, an Engineering News-Record
Top 100 Design Firm, specializes in the planning,
design, and construction of water and wastewater
facilities. In the past four years, the firm has
exhaustively tested a large number of 3D software products. In 2005, it decided to convert its
2D Autodesk-based production systems to
Bentley's 3D software.
and simplified the process of submitting documents to the client. The firm no longer has to pull
files from all the various servers to a centralized
location for plotting and archiving. This can now
be done from any office and all in one step.
Because Carollo Engineers uses a shared
database with PlantSpace Piping and P&ID, cer-
tain project elements can be managed more
effectively. Equipment numbers can be shared as
well as pipe specifications. This allows the firm to
better manage changes as they occur.
With experienced MicroStation users, the firm
expects a nearly 25 percent reduction in hours to
produce the same 2D drawing as it took using
AutoCAD. Using 3D MicroStation to produce the
same drawing, that savings balloons to more than
40 percent. ;
The use of 3D models has allowed U.S.-based
Carollo Engineers to visualize its projects as it completes the design. Conflicts can be seen immediately and be resolved before going to construction.
By managing project documents in Project Wise,
Carollo Engineers realized dramatic decreases
in the amount of time it takes to browse for and
then open a file. The firm's project workflow
results in many projects being shared across the
enterprise. In some cases, this means that any
given project could be worked on in as many as
five or six offices.
In the past, WAN speeds would have made this
painful, but with file caching in ProjectWise, the
time it takes to open any given file has been greatly reduced. It has also eased the use of references
