City of Mississauga
In 2003, the city of Mississauga launched its
eCity portal, which provides residents with a serv-ice-oriented Web experience. The goal is to realize savings through a cost-avoidance model and
offer residents and clients better customer service
by making all major city services available online.
The initial launch included the first phase of
eCity’s online mapping application, which enables users to search and display property-relat-ed mapping and aerial imagery.
The city built its eMaps system on MicroStation,
Bentley Publisher, Bentley Geo Web Publisher, and
MicroStation GeoGraphics. Through eMaps, city
staff can access integrated geospatial data. They
can easily overlay mapping themes, query data,
and generate custom maps, which will decrease
the need for highly trained GIS/CADD staff just
for producing simple maps. In return, GIS/CADD
staff can now focus more of their time on GIS
analysis, user automation, and data maintenance.
There are several standard mapping products that
are maintained by the city’s Geomatics section.
These are maintained in MicroStation and out-putted as PDF documents for public consumption
on the city’s Web portal. The integration of these
mapping products into eMaps will ensure that the
information is always current and reduce the
requirement to maintain the PDF maps.
Workflows were established to ensure that all
geospatial data is current and accurate. Providing
this type of self service will provide additional
value to the city’s customers while reducing staff
time and costs. ;
