MAPPING AND CADASTRE
A Living Atlas
of the World
Liber AB
The project is the creation of Liber Kartor’s
new 384-page world atlas that was published
in December 2004. Libers Grand World Atlas
is in Swedish and includes maps from all continents in scales ranging from 1:2 mill to
1: 9. 5 mill.
Making an index in the pre-computer years
was a very laborious and tedious process, but
is today fast and accurate. The index is calculated in MicroStation and exported to a text
file. The index is then imported to a Microsoft
Access database, sorted, and manipulated with
our Index software developed in Visual Basic.
In the final process, the index is exported to
the layout software Adobe InDesign. Color-separated postscript and PDF files are generated
with Adobe Acrobat for transfer to the printer. ;
Today, all maps produced at Liber Kartor are
“computer made.” The basis for its map production is its databases:Vector data are stored
in MicroStation, pixel data as TIFF files, and
geographical names in a tabular database.
Database-driven software now produces the
scripts needed to manage the whole process
of mapmaking.
The most important single software element
is an MDL application that Liber Kartor uses
for making indexes from its vector databases.

State Highway
Official Map
Maryland State Highway
Administration
The Maryland State Highway Administration (Maryland SHA) is legally required to
keep records of the progress and status of
work on all Maryland state and county
roads. Its Highway Information Services
Division (HISD) creates and maintains
digital maps for all state roads.
An official transportation map is designed
biannually using Bentley’s MicroStation
and Digital InterPlot software. The production of the 2005-2006 Maryland Official
Transportation Map began in August 2004
and was completed in April 2005. One million
copies of the map were printed and will be distributed to the motoring public at no charge.
In 2004, Maryland SHA implement-
ed the use of Project Wise, and the digital map
files were moved into Project Wise for secure
remote access to maps by remote users. Now,
when a consultant firm uses Project Wise in a
Maryland SHA project, it can download the
digital maps needed for the project. Also,
ProjectWise synchronizes the changes
between the administration’s internal GIS
server and the digital maps. ;
