US 219 Improvement
Greenhorne & O’Mara, Inc.
This project, which was awarded to
Greenhorne & O’Mara Inc. (G&O), includes a
complete inventory of environmental features, development and evaluation of design
alternatives, and recommendation for
improvements to a 15-mile section of U.S.
219 in Somerset County, Pa. It also involved a
comprehensive public involvement program.
During Phase I, G&O collected data on and
compiled a complete inventory of the natural
environment resources, cultural resources,
farmlands, and mining areas. Using GIS, G&O
was able to establish and evaluate alternatives to meet the needs of the project. Using
GEOPAK and MicroStation software, G&O’s
engineers developed seven alternatives—
including the No-Build Transportation System
Management (TSM), upgrade of existing U.S.
219, and four alternatives for new alignment.
In Phase II, G&O used GEOPAK design software working within MicroStation to develop detailed alternatives. It used the actual,
ultimate roadway typical section to develop
the footprint of the future roadway.
G&O established a project Web site that
contains up-to-date information on the project’s progress. It has also prepared and distributed five project newsletters. GIS,
MicroStation, and graphics software were
used to create realistic photomontages and
fly-throughs to help the public and agency
representatives visualize the proposed
roadway improvements. ;

In 1995, studies on how to relieve traffic congestion began. Grontmij took on the responsibility of optimizing existing design proposals and developing them in greater detail,
involving professionals in multiple disciplines. Bentley Arenium provided a single
point of access to design models, and Bentley
MXROAD accelerated design work on this
very complex infrastructure. ;
